Transfer Case Issues???

Well, I took the X in to the dealer for a high pitch whiny/roaring noise (while the vehicle is in motion). At first, I thought it was a wheel bearing or the center driveshaft bearing. The dealer just called and said that the transfer case was defective. I did a search on here and couldn't come up with much. So, have any of you ever had issues with the transfer cases? The X has around 67K miles and is a 6 speed manual.

I just think it's odd for the transfer case to give out so soon.
