Transfer Case Issues???
I just think it's odd for the transfer case to give out so soon. Dan

Yep, that's what I did. They are going to replace it under the "goodwill" program. New (or reman) transfer case will be here on Wednesday. Hopefully, all will go well.

I'm can take from this that you have an 03 or earlier. What happens is the front output shaft is a splined slip joint and the splines wear abnormally sometimes then slip. The wear is usually caused by either different rolling diameter tires or water ingress into the splines causing rust.

Actually, looking at his original post and pic, it looks like he has 2004+ X5 with X Drive. He list his X5 as a 2004 and the pics look like the facelift E53.

Hmmm. thats odd then. I see what I described maybe one or twice a year, but never with the x-drive t-cases as they have flanges at the front output instead of the slip-yoke. Either way it was covered under goodwill which was a great thing!

The X is home!
 The dealer replaced the transfer case and some bushing between the driveshaft and transfer case(?). I am so happy they did the repair under their goodwill policy. That, and they also provided me with a nice 328i loaner too.It's great to see a BMW dealer take care of their customers.
