Cool A lot of issues with the 2001 X5 3.0i, eh?!?

Seems like everyone who has one has had issues. Mine have started this year, from replacing a busted axle and sway bar links, to my most recent debacle of it overheating and replacing the coolant reservoir, thermostat and shift links. Now, on my way to work, the 'check engine soon' light came on and rough idling occurred right afterwards. It was hard for the truck to get pick up and had to power going up the hill. Had it towed back to the mechanic and I'm eager to see the diagnosis.

I have almost 150K miles on mine and I have spent ~$10K in repairs over the past year with over half of that being a new tranny and new cats. Seems like every month it is something different. As much as I love driving mine, it is really starting to be a burden on me.

No matter what you drive it will have a few problems when it gets older... wear happens across the board. I see numerous high mileage X5's daily. Some in near perfect condition, some in need of help. It all comes down to taking care of your vehicle and fixing problems as they arise.

95K and after warranty I changed the control arms and 4 c/v boots so far. I give that a solid 9 out of 10 on reliability and cost of ownership.

No vehicle is perfect. Example, I have a 2001 330i with 35k miles. The alternator went out this past June at 33.5k miles. Whether new or old, low or high miles, no vehicle is perfect.

At least these BMW's are easy to work on.

3.0 engine is solid. it's all about how you maintain your vehicle. nothing wrong with '01 year either.

Sounds like its time for a new indy!

Just use this electronic indy called X5world and tell the wrench turners what to change... apparently their weak point is diagnosis. (as is the case with most indy shops when it comes to BMW's)
