I have owned a 2001 X5 and now 2005 X5 and had no major problems. If you want an SUV where you are in control get the X5 but if you want the SUV to be in control get some other SUV.

I am fairly happy with my 03 X5. I think the problem for many of us might be that we compare it to say a Jeep GC (I owned 3 GCs before the X5 ) and on the first impression it seems I had more problems with the X5 than the Jeeps , however on the other hand the X5 has much more electronics and features to it.
Overall I had no major problems just little ones like the folding mirrors, aux fan, condensation in the foglights and a few minor glitches ...

My 01 4.4 has had it's fair share with issues, however they were all corrected within a few months of ownership. I'm now in CPO coverage, but have been trouble free for almost two years now *knock on wood* ... the only problems I have had were a leaking coolant hose, sway bars replaced, and a bad rack and pinion. Besides that, I absolutely love this SAV. You will not regret it. Enjoy your X5! There's nothing else like it on the road.

I have my '05 X5 3.0i for 11 months now, 13,500 miles, no major problems. One of my interior light bulbs burnt out, some condensation in my headlights one week after posession (went away by itself), and one night, my headlights turned off when I stopped at lights or stop signs (problem also went away by itself). Other than that, no other issues. Really enjoying the car, and you will also. Have fun with it.

I think it is safe to say that 03 was definetly the most reliable model year.
