gas odor

2005 4.4i k50mils. Does anyone have any experince of having gas odor after stoping engine. It feels pretty strong on driver's side close to rear wheel. Stays max half on hour and then gone. I checked under the car no visual leaks. I don't like local dealer who is just after my money without serious help.

Hi i removed my leaky tank on sunday and think you should start by moving back seat for access. Then remove the tank sender covers this will allow you to see most of the connections on top of tank.I then filled my tank until i could see and smell the problem. My tank is cracked at the rear right vent, but there are lots of connections on top of tank i hope your problem is repairable.ie hose clamp or sender seal...the rest of the connections are in the right rear wheel well.Hope this helps.
cheers Rondo

And usually the DMTL system will pick up a leak as it pressurizes the tank to look for leaks itself, which is why you get a check engine light if you refuel with the engine on. But if the leak is on a part of the system that is not checked by the DMTL system like a fuel pressure line or return line then it won't catch it.

As rondo stated both the fuel pump and senders are easily accessible under the back seat which just pulls out. And if I remember right there are some fuel line and tank venting hose junctions right in front of the tank on the drivers side, that may be where you're smelling the fumes from. Worth a look underneath with a flashlight for signs of road debris damage.

Thanks for help. I'll check connections and hopefully get this fixed. If I find something interesting I'll let you know.

Just to update on this issue. I found the leak on the fuel return line to tank. Drivers side under the rear seat. (easy access like weasel56 said) The connection part (plastic nozzle where hose connects to tank) has a crack. I went to local BMW specialist he replaced a part (needs special tool to remove from the tank). Once looking at the crack it is for sure manufacturing error on the plastic casting, that should have been recalled by BMW since it is a fire hazard !! Just heads up if you have gas odor after parking this may be the case.

Glad you got it fixed, and to put some minds at ease, I have never come across that in over 4 years... so at least it seems to be an isolated incident for that piece. If it happened anything resembling often you'd better believe BMW would put a safety recall on it. But anytime you smell a fuel odor you should definitely fix it immediately!
