Why would you need to boost octane rating
beyond 91ish?

Just was looking around and came across a few people who use an octane booster on their BMW's. Just curious to see who else uses it and if it is worth it.

It will be cheaper to buy 91 than to buy a lower octane fuel and boost it with an additive.

There is no advantage whatsoever to using a higher octane than recommended by BMW, unless you have modified the engine to take advantage of that higher knock resistance (forced-induction, or a change in compression ratio).

I've used it once or twice, and it really makes no difference. Just use good gasoline and premium gas and you'll be fine.

I only use Top Tier Graded fuel in my X5. Here in Indiana the Premium at Conoco is 95 Octane.

I know the Octane rating in the states is different to here in Europe bit of a shame really as it is well known you guys draw the short straw when it comes to fuel quality.

How ever all the majors have a Octane booster in their addidtive take BP Ultimate or Shell V power.

So in turn yes it must do some good.

Had a meeting with one of the managers from a refinery here in the UK today and he was telling me that they have almost refined all the sulphur out of petrol now in Europe.

I would never put octane boost into any BMW, they strongly recommend against it...you are looking for serious problems, like trying to load Mac software into a windows based PC. my $.02

How about using a fuel system cleaner? Its a little off the topic, but would that make any difference?
