Transmission problem in 2003 X5 4.4i
I have a 2003 X5 4.4i, and recently I have been having some serious transmission problems. The car slips in almost any gear in moderate to heavy acceleration. The car does not catch the gear, and then jumps violently once it does. I'm wondering is there any way to service the transmission at a non-bmw location? can this transmission be cracked open and fixed? i was told this is not possible and the transmission can only be replaced. I think the problem most likely has to do with the clutch... Thank you for your help. Also if anyone has an E53 transmission for sale please PM me.

Sadly, you're most likely looking at a new transmission purchase in the near future. I haven't heard of anyone cracking it open and fixing it. I've only seen people buy refurbs or new transmissions. It is extremely complex and expensive *between 3-5K usually*. Search for transmission issues on this board, you'll see many.

You can service the trans. May or may not be worth it depending on labor. This isn't something for any mechanic to work on.

with your symptoms it seems like hell to try and fix...but doesn't necesarily means it can't be done...u are better off replacing it...
