Service Engine Soon Light Keeps Coming On

I am new to this forum but not to BMWs. I have a 2001 X5 3.0 with 91k miles on it. Over the last six months I have replaced all four sensors with hopes that I finally had the solution.

About two months ago I had a technician tell me that I need to replace a computer board if I am remembering that correctly or have it rebuilt.

I bought the vehicle as a certified vehicle with 32k on it and it has run like a charm. It has always been serviced by BMW except the last 20k and even that was serviced by a BMW guy just not at a dealership.

The "Service Engine Soon" light now goes off and on and it is driving me crazy because the car seems to be running fine. My concern is that it is on for a reason and I need to figure that out without going broke. Fix it or cut bait. I figured there has got to be somebody in this forum that could shed this light!

Have you tried replacing your intake boot or tube elbow P/N: 13541440102? $17 and 1/2 hour of your time! Good Luck

Have you pulled the code to determine the cause of the SES light coming on? If not, I would start there before you start replacing random parts.

You can't fix anything until you know where to look!

Yea, I had the same thing happen to my 01 4.4i about a month ago. I changed the spark plugs and that turned the light off. Ive also heard that when you hit 90k miles the light is on for no reason and can use the after market BMW mechanic service tool to turn it off yourself if your sure theres no problems.

djbock you are correct...it's been checked I just need to ask my tech what the codes said...and yes weasel56 you are correct...I wanted to check in here as well because two recommendations have already been made that weren't discussed by my tech so that's one of the great things about this forum...keep them coming and Happy Turkey Day!

As a dealer tech I can tell you the light does not ever come on for no reason. And keep in mind that the check engine light can be triggered by the transmission control module as well, so if the light is on and there are no faults stored in the DME... the faults stored in the EGS.
