Red face radio cuts out

I have a 2001 4.4i with the tv/coms/navigation pack. When I start the car the radio/CD/Navigation voice will all work but after about 30 seconds I loose the sound - the nav system still works ie map and on screen directions but no sound.

Has anyone else had this problem.

Help!!

Sounds like you may have a problem with the amp... when it cuts out, do you have sound from any souces (radio, cd changer, "high tech tape deck", etc.) or just nothing at all.

no nothing at all - but then it can all come back and work fine for a couple of hours - I wondered if it could be linked to the satnav - you know how the music is cut off while the directions are given - and then the sound comes back - only on this one the sound doesn't come back!

if all sound is off even map directions, possible your amp is going out (most time heat related issues, amp overheats and goes into protection mode, after it cools back down it will turn back on.) have you noticed that the time the sound plays has gotten shorter over time?

If while the sound is cut out it still gives you map directions the you may be correct about the nav system is muting the sound

thanks for your thoughts - sometimes all the sound are out as soon as I start the car from cold - were is the amp located - it cut out yesterday after hitting a bump so it may just be a loose conection of worn cable - lets hope!

The amp is in the rear left side panel, look for signs of water back there as I have seen a clogged sunroof drain cause water to run down the headliner and drip right on the electronics back there... but hopefully thats not the case. But check the connections for signs of corrosion.

sounds like the thermo protection circuit, it can be caused by a loose wire which spikes every time it makes contact
