rear factory are bilstein on my 02 4.4 as well as kewlx5's 3.0.
my front are sachs. i'm sure you can find a full bilstein replacement kit easily... edit: according to bilstein's application guide you can find front left, front right, and rear dampers: http://www.bilstein.com/304bilsteinappguidecomplete.pdf just search for x5 for the part numbers and then search ebay and web for best prices. i'm a fan of bilstein as they are located in San Diego and will ship fast replacements or do custom jobs (they revalved my shocks for my 996 race car) Last edited by hayaku; 11-29-2008 at 09:29 PM. |

Thanks for the link, and I'm also a fan of bilstein... but the only problem I have is that it lumps all the X5's together, doesn't differentiate sport vs non-sport and puts the same struts on the 4.6is as the 3.0i. The OEM struts have different part #s for sport/non so I know there must be some sort of valving difference. That is where my online search is failing me... and the only struts I found that were for sport suspension were only claimed to be OEM replacements, yet cost well over my cost for actual OEM. I may end up with the OEM's from the dealer by the time this is all over, just looking for a better option before I place the order...

I don't think the aftermarket Bilstein's you buy will have the same valving as the OEM shocks. OEM valving in a BMW will be best unless it's a track car with different spring rates.
I like Bilstein's too for their design, construction and ease to revalve, but for whatever reason their valving on ots shocks always seems to be really overdamped..I mean really overdamped. I've seen this on more than a few dyno's of Bilstein aftermarket dampers. OEM is best with stock spring rates imo. |

That sounds like it may put me back on the OEM's, which I can get for my cost at the dealer. I guess I was just hoping for a better handeling option than the OEM sports. But I guess the gool ol engineers at BMW may have done their homework more so than others...

On any vehicle (using stock spring rates) that's had the factory extensively calibrate the rates/valving/bar/etc (which means every BMW), it's been my experience that it's best to go with OEM dampers for replacement. I learned this when I replaced the worn OE shocks in my Prelude SH. Went from leaking original ones to Bilstein to Koni to new OEM shocks. Different isn't always better.

Well, I guess I will just order them monday when I get to work... Guess I was just hoping there were some bigger/better/faster/more strut options known about on here as with many other things... I usually do what I think is the best option, just to find a better option shortly after that I somehow overlooked. Like when I did the resonator delete with small resonators like on the homepage link... just to have numerous threads come up on x-pipes just as soon as the welds cool... which I can't believe I didn't think of myself as I am no stranger to that. Just need my head pulled from my own ass sometimes
