Before you go out and by a CPO because the dealership tells you its never been in a crash, nothing messed up on it. Last summer I bout a 2004 330ci CPO paid mid 20's for it, the car was returned to BMW because the entire passenger side of the car was crashed, mechanical problems, etc... Just be weary of CPO look at the car like it does not come with a warranty...if that makes any sense. I now have a 03 X5 non-CPO and have no problems at all.

I bought my X5 from CarMax. It was available with an $1,800 3-year or 30,000 mile warranty, which was a no-brainer. I have had A/C issues, fuel pump, water pump, valley pan gasket, alternator, final stage resistor, high side A/C service port, thrust rod bushings, and so on fixed on my car under warranty. The alternator, water pump and fuel pump left me stranded 3 times, so they were not items that the stealer was pushing. Make sure that you are disciplined enough to set the money aside for repairs if you do not go the warranty route, even if you are using an Indy mech. The X can be costly.
I agree with you on the 3.0. The 4.4 gives much better performance and gas mileage is the same or better. |

I had sports envy at first, but after driving my 3.0 X5 many thousands of miles on long trips I am glad I have the std suspension and seats. I think it is standard because it is better for most people most of the time.
We worked on a lot of Jeeps. Good 4X system, but a low-grade vehicle in most every other way. I think just about every other SUV is better, certainly the major imports are. The X is an entirely new level. And it should be for the original price! |

I had a 4.4 with sport package. It handled great, and was quick enough. But, with the low profile tires I had, you felt every, and I mean every, bump on the road. It was OK for me, but rear seat passengers sometimes complained.
Today, we bought a 3.0 with premium package. It is livelier to drive than I thought. I think if I help it breath a little better, and lighten it up a little through tuning, it will be quite adequate. You should probably try to drive both to decide. BTW - I made sure I got one that was CPO eligible. I just didn't want to risk it with a used car. Dealers are very anxious to sell cars right now also. (note - CPO is dealer extended warranty to 6 years or 100k miles) |

Hey guys
I found a 4.4i X5 (2005), that has 25000 miles driven on it. Its priced at $24900.00 Here is the description (BMW dealer in California): ***Full Factory Warranty And Full Free Maintenance Up to 50k Miles Or 2/09*** Premium/Sport Package X5 with 19' Sport Wheels, w/ ParK Distance Control, LOW MILEAGE One Owner California Car. I went to drive the vehicle and it seemed good. Also, the salesman told me that its not been in any collisions. I just have a few questions: 1) why is it so cheap? 2) is it possible to set the milage meter back? (this is the first used car I'm buying) 3) should I get a private mechanic to do an inspection? Thanks so much you guys rule!!! |
