I guess I never held out long enough in 4th. I must have been afraid that it wouldn't shift over like my older e36.

these cars have self-preservation in mind, you don't have anything to worry about...it's not a true manual mode nor would a fully automatic mode (in a new car at least) ever make you bounce off the rev limiter if there's another gear to be had

Hahaha .. yeah, we should meet up and compare notes. Our cars are almost identical, except I have the light poplar?

I definitely would like to meet more members/owners.

My Inifiniti coupe would bounce off rev-limiter in "manumatic" until I upshift by pushing the lever. But this is not quite the subject

I just found out about the Sport Mode this Saturday.

I knew about the manual shifting, but I didn't know about Sport Mode. If I had known, when I went upstate a month ago the Sport Mode would have came in handy. Passing was not a problem in D Mode, but man... I would love to have experienced passing in S Mode.

I have a 06 3.0 X5 and when I go into Steptronic mode drive it just shows 5 as being the maximum. Do I still have a 6 speed auto?

I think the V8s and maybe the sport model I6s have the 6 speed. If it shows 5 speeds, that's it. No extra gear hiding there...

Thanks for your reply. I knew there was a 6 speed auto as I test drove a 05 3.0 non-sport and I think it had a 6 speed auto but when shopping around for my 06 x5 3.0 non-sport the dealer said that 06 x5 never had a 6 speed auto.

Most of these answers are wrong...

Sport mode basically makes the gas pedal LESS linear. The gas pedal feels more sensitive because nearly all throttle input is moved to the front of the pedal hence why the car feels more powerful in light driving.

It begs to be mashed on, and is unsafe when driving hard. The car is not more powerful in sport mode. 100% throttle with the sport button on/off is the same as 100% throttle to the engine.

Pointless button IMO because it just makes you FEEL faster. Plain and simple.
