Thanks for other link

Indy reckons on 2 hrs plus cost of part so may get this done in future. £280 @ indy or thererabouts & £400 @ dealer I reckon.

Pumps is around about £140 for OE BMW item but £77 for a 3rd party copy part.

Not sure if maker is original supplier to bmw though - make is feeber febo or something sounding similar & according to my reputable indy parts supplier.

May get this changed as preventative maintenace in future - indy had a 51k pre 04 4.4i X5 in shop today for a water pump failure. Owner had noticed loss of collant and dripping from under pump so spotted just in time.

Had mine checked today no play, no noise, no leaks - Took mine to indy today for full coolant system pressure test as I had just resolved a loss of coolant issue from worn bleed screw to header tank which I replaced last week.

Sounds like bearing seal problem, not impeller spin-off.
The first would be easier to detect or suymptoms more obvious than the later failure.

Thanks for replying but I need to clarify some apparent confusion here.

My water pump has not failed or shown signs of failing.

I merely spoke with my indy today re possible preventative maintenance & relayed here possible future choices.

My leak was 100% nothing to do with water pump (leaking/worn header tank bleed screw & o ring), & now sorted.

Update:

Well I had to get my valve cover gasket replaced today ('01 3.0 85K miles) but asked the indy to check the water pump and the belts as well (dealer said those were getting bad). Turns out the water pump was on it's last leg, and I do need the 2 drive belts replaced and they recommended changing the thermostat while they are doing the water pump. I haven't had too many problems so I guess this goes with the age of the vehicle. Came out to about $1,000 for all of that--not too bad.

He also said "you are lucky you don't have a 4.4--those have a lot of problems"--I thought that was interesting.

Did they even think to check your separator, since your vcg was done?

Exactly...The oil seperator is probably the real reason behind why the vcg was toast.. Happened to me the same way.

^People have to realize that in other cars, there is no pressurization of the valve cover area so valve cover gaskets can go for 100k + before they start leaking due to getting old and cracked. A 60k failure is not just a bad gasket.

Hmmm I will have to call them tomorrow and ask about the separator.
