tranny shift

hi everyone..read a post about re-programming tranny basic operation yourself by turning key to first position without starting engine then press down on gas until past kickdown position and hold for 30 seconds..will this really work..if so will it work on an 2005 x5 4.4 because post refers to a 3.0 and if i do it will it damage or harm anything...mine i think needs to be re=programed..i just bought it cpo with 16k sport/prem package for 30k..let me know what you think...mine also shifts hard 1st to 2nd when it is cold after having sat outside all night in cold weather and if i dont let it warm up..tranny makes one bang noise from 1 to 2 then ok..thanks rob...

yes that is very normal behavior before the car is warmed up, which is why you should keep it below 2k rpm until it is at operating temperature.

is that the only time the hard shift is occuring?

I believe there is a software update available from the dealer for the rough shift issue..
