There are alot of reason for the trans fail safe to come on.. Bad battery, dsc actuator valve, alt., or trans thermostat(located under the resivor) see what kinds of codes it's putting out.

I got that one time when I forgot to plug the MAF / Air Filter housing connector back in after taking it out for a maintenance project. Plugged the connector back in and the error went away.

I'm having this problem now with my BMW X5 2001 4.4i. 160k miles. It started quite suddenly. I was driving normally, then I felt as if I was dragging something. I pulled over and checked underneath and found nothing. I drove again, revved high and sped up. Nothing wrong. Then when I stopped at the light, as I stepped on the gas, it's as if the clutch was engaged. My car started shaking then would not go forward. About 5 seconds later, my car went to "Trans Failsafe Prog" which made it stuck on 5th gear. 5th gear works well but every time that program is out (after restart) it keeps on doing the sliding clutch like thing on the first couple of gears until it engages the trans.failsafe.prog thing. Please advise.
