2001 X5 4.4i Radiator flush??

Hello out there,

I just bought a 2001 X5 4.4 with 49k miles and wanted to start doing normal maintenance. Because of the age of the vehicle, I wanted to flush the radiator, replace brake fluid, etc. The vehicle looks well cared for and virtually brand new, but I bought it from a Mercedes dealer who took it in an a trade and I have no history of service.


Any help would be greatly appreciated

I would also start a binder with all the service that is going to be done on the vehicle in the future. Service history to me is a must have!! Start now and you'll have something for later. Did you buy it with a safety? How are the cv boots? check for cracking because they are sure to go! Also read over the articles here, there are some good write ups. You be sure to replace the common problems, Final stage resistors, cv boots, water pumps, oil seperators, window regulators, and other issue's aswell. The X is a great vehicle with lots of up keep. Hope your up for a challenge at times!! Good luck and welcome to the forum!!

Thanks for the input,
I was basically looking for details like: where's the drain plugs are on the engine block for the coolant. Detailed procedures. Are there any good books or web-based technical manuals? Where are these resistors you speak of???

As a proud new owner of a smooth riding 2001 X5 3.0 - 62.5k mi - I'm glad to hear you, too, are a former Jeep owner! I owned 3 Grand Cherokee Ltds. since '93. They all run like a top but the wife is making me sell the '93 - 173k mi - because, 'We don't need 4 cars!'

I guess, gone are the days when we incurred a few (if any repairs) and just drove!!?! In my new X5, I know to change the water pump, thermostat, 'oil separater', air filters and check the CV boots, but what is a 'Final Stage Resistor', is there another name for this part?

I've just fore-gone the option of purchasing a 3ard party extended warranty due to lack of quality coverage, shady contracts and high premiums and have decided to do it the 'Jeep' way and try to do as much maintenance/Rx as I can.

I'd really appreciate it if you could list any other components that you think I may need to attend to and any other preventative maintenance that I should perform outside the mfgrs service schedule?

John: Make sure you look on the X5World home page, all the DIY articles are listed there.

Limo: There is not another name for the final stage resistor, it is not a preventative maintenance item, and you don't need to worry about it unless it fails and you get the common symptoms of the heater fan continuing to run. You may want to check the home page for the articles as well.

.......Ah-hah!
Once again, I got it! It's like the blower resistor motor switch component that I had to replace at the same time in both my '95 Ford Windstar and my '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee late last year. In both vehicles the fan continually operated at their highest speeds........

Thank you all for your inputs. It sure is nice to have a group soo willing to share information. I will be doing a brake job on my X5 soon and will attempt to take some pictures and post the part numbers and results.

According to the Zeckhausen website, it appears that the front rotors and hubs underwent a change around 8/2000. Up until 8/2000 the rotors had additional mounting holes. These mated with dowels which were mounted in the hubs. If my car has these. I'll take some pictures.

My X5 was manufactured in 6/2000, so it may very well have this hub type.
