why avoiding dealer? if you want the OEM ones, your best bet is the dealership. find the dealers that have online parts department (such as morristown bmw). their price is good. or if you want the aftermarket ones, try ebay. bavarian_motorwerks is the company where I got mine from. several other people in this forum also ordered from them thru the group buy last year.

If I'm not mistaken, the price difference is only $190 between those and the OEM RBs. Money well spent and looks MUCH nicer than those $380 pieces ... you won't regret it.

You should be able to get the OEM Aluminum RB Kit for around $570 shipped.

I have the one that with etched X5 letters on it and I like them. Pretty easy to install. It's about $200 less than the OEM ones and you save the hassle in putting them on. But to each of his own. Some people still prefer OEM running boards.

I'm not against OEM ones but I step on the aftermarket running boards on my X almost everyday. They seems to support my weight(180lbs) pretty well.
