Just bought a 2001 X5 tonight and guess what....

the antifreeze fluid spilled throughout the engine bay all over the highway on to my truck. I was driving behind my wife that was in the X5, only after 10 miles of leaving the dealership. But the car salesman was great he called a wrecker and within a hour they picked up the vehicle and he is going to fix it for free even though I signed a paper stating vehicle sold as is. i bought it for 11k out the door with 99k miles fully loaded without navi, I hope that is the only problem I have. I will have pics up hopefully this weekend.

What color and eng do you have? Do a carfax search to its Rx history. I just bought an '01, too, and I discovered those 3ard party extended warranties (for our age car) aren't worth the paper they're written on with their 'gotcha' clauses. I'm going to do the preventative maintenance/Rx-old-parts routine and hope the X5 quality engineering takes me the next 100+ k miles!
I may be interested in your tail lights. How much are you asking? Do you have pics of the Led lights?

ZsX5o3-
No pre purchase inspection was done to me honestly it is a waste of time, I mean I took my mercedes to a shop to get pre inspected for a buyer and they said it looked good just needed brake fluid flush, shift linkage bushing and MAF sensor cause it was reading low. Well the buyer bought my car and a week later his tie rods broke and now he has a $1100 bill. I am not saying its a complete waste but remember mechanics are human they can be lazy like some, also they want you to buy the car also so they have a customer. Break downs are going to happen you just need to make sure you have a pocketbook that can afford having it fixed.

Tamalolong-
To be honest it sometimes doesn't matter what price you pay in most cases. The retail value isn't that high on these so I would not have spent no more than what i paid. Also what would have been the difference between me paying 11K or 58K it still would of happened you can never really tell when something is going to break down especially something like a hose or waterpump. But I don't know what really happened yet, he is getting it looked at today. I even looked at the maintence yesterday they just did the last BMW service in May 2008 This vehicle was CPOd before I bought it. So again you never know.

X5limo-
I have the 4.4i and its white and as far as the tailights I will be selling the OEM clear and red taillights that came with the car, so I can buy the led taillights. Give me a decent price cause I am going to list these in the classfieds this weekend when I get pics. I am all about trying to do my own maintence especially preventive maintence, i have to call BMW service shop in GA where it was last serviced to get the maintence history so i know what has and has not been done.

After seeing the led tail lights, I think I'll go with them, too! They look cool! Are you getting the clear red ones or the Black ones to accent your SUV?

I think that in your case it would've shown that you needed a coolant overhaul.

For 11K, I don't think you got beat on the deal. Even if you have to put a couple thousand into it, that's still not bad.

But on the other hand, a pre-purchase inspection is never a bad idea. The place you buy it from is always going to say they looked over it, their mechanic blessed it as a-ok, etc. But paying $100 to a trusted independent shop is well worth the money in my opinion. The inspections I've had done have been very thorough. They check engine compression, look at the oil and coolant, check battery, alternator, plug in the obd-ii scanner and check for codes, pull a front and rear wheel and check brakes and rotors, suspension part wear, cv joint boots...stuff like that.

Yeah, they could always miss something, but if it's dripping oil or coolant, or if a CV boot is split, or if it needs brakes or the rotors are shot, they're going to find stuff like that.

The car is less than 10 years old and the freeze plugs are gone is that normal?

My guess is that the coolant is old?
