Replacing tires on my 2004 X5 3.0

I am leaning heavily toward the Fortera Triple tread tire...235 65 17

We live in Seattle and of course have to deal with quite a bot of rain. We ocassionaly have snow but frankly when it gets to deep we leae teh X5 in teh garage and only drive the Lexus LX470 (a glorified LandCruiser but NAILS in the snow)

The X5 is primarily driven by my wife. She transports my 6 year old son the majority of the time so safety for the two of them is concern 1...Road Noise is Concern 2...Price is Concern 3.

Any feedback on either these tires or a suggestion for me to consider would be much appreciated. Also, any thoughts on changing sizes of tires?

since safety is your number one concern you will need to provide them with proper winter tires about Nov thru March. So you might as well buy good summers for the rest of the season.

winter tires also have a softer rubber durometer that make them grip better in cold ( starting about 38F). it is an amazing difference really.

used rims can be had on craigslist for cheap....

I have Forterra silent armor (not triple tread) on my Yukon. They've been good tires, marginally better wear than the Michelin Cross Terrains. Neither the Forterra or Cross Terrains are great in snow after the first 10-15K miles. Both are very quiet and last a long time, 50K+ on my Yukon.

I'm convinced there is no such thing as an all-season tire that is also a "perfect" winter or summer tire, but with a 4WD or AWD vehicle and common sense, you'll do fine with good all season tires.

I'd probably buy the Forterras again. Maybe not the Michelin Cross Terrains, I'd probably go for the LTX M/S if I buy Michelins again.

Have the triple tread on my Ford 4x4 and think they are great. Snow perfromance is fine, dry and wet is fantastic. Pretty quiet as well.

Thaks for the thoughts...For as many times as it snows here in Seatle I think I will forgoe the extra set of rims and call in sick on those days where she HAS to use a car and let her use mine...

I'm tinking the Forters'a sound good.

Wait a minute, the Fortera's ARE a winter tire.

Quote tire rack:

Fortera TripleTred radials meet the industry’s severe snow service requirements and are branded with the mountain / snowflake symbol).

I am driving the Sh*t out of them in the snow. They do great. It is an advanced tire in that it does well on dry and wet pavement TOO!!

They are fully capable in all 4 season's. I drive them year 'round on the Ford. Use the Ford in the winter to haul the dog around and into the mountians. I didn't put them on the x because their dry and wet does not qualify as a performance tire.

Now, come to think of it, for not much more money, you can get the Vredestein Wintrac 4 extreme. They are awesome winter tires that cover 149 mph and perform very well in wet and dry also. I think they are turning out to be the ultimate winter tire. Many people on the Rover forums talk about driving them year round. I have had them on the x for three months. No issues on some twisties as well as at 120. This might be the way for you to go. I have some pictures posted in other threads.

with one tire trying to cover all 4 seasons there will be compromises. noise is the most obvious one. you may not notice any of the others under normal driving conditions.

during emergency maneuvers, however, the right tire can save your (and you) bacon...

Ps I am not rich enough to buy the cheap stuff....

They are not cheap, but I'm pretty sure I am going to go with the Nokian WRG2 SUV for the wife's '06 X5. I've heard consistently great reveiws on the Nokian WR SUV for awhile now, and good reports on the newer generation G2's (repalces the original WR).

They are an all season tire with the severe service (snowflake on the mountain) rating, from arguabley the best winter tire manufacturer around. Check them out..

For what it is worth, I've heard excellent reviews on the GoodYear Assurance TripleTread (car tires, similar design, but doesn't carry the severe service rating) for all weahter (including snow) driving as well, but I think I'd rather give the Nokian's a try..
