Low Oil Level Indicator?
So we are still in the first couple weeks of new ownership of our '06 CPO X5. This weekend on startup (warm, had been driven only 30 minutes prior) I get a 'Stop Engine Oil Pressure' message that comes up, literally, just long enough to read it, then goes away. So we drive to our next destination (about 30 minutes, maybe 20 miles) and when I turn the engine off I get an 'Oil level low' message. I happen to be right up the street from the selling dealer, so I drop by, and the message won't come up, but they take it over to service to look at it. Bring it back 15 minutes later, saying it was about a 1/2 quart low, they topped it off, and the remainder of the quart is in the back. Just how sensitive is this low oil level indicator? I would think it would have to be a full quart or more low to get such messages. Of course my salesperson (who first tried to check the oil level by going through menus on the NAV system -- after a couple of minutes I couldn't stand it anymore and suggested he use the dip stick to check the oil level) says 'oh yes, it is very sensitive', but.... Note, the truck was parked on level ground in both instances, so I wouldn't expect any effect on oil level from outside factors. Should I be worried?

No you shouldn't worry really. Some X's burn more oil then others... I have to top mine off every now and again...In fact I just did this morning with half a bottle. The sensor is sensitive and thats to give you plenty of ample warning to let you know before its too late. Most cars when that warning shows up its pretty much at a critical level... From my experience, ours cars will let you know sooner.
Don't worry about it unless after a few days or couple weeks the warning light comes back again. it shouldn't come back for a while, I'm talking a couple months or more, you'll probably have an oil change by that time anyway. |

That's a bit over the top. Did the service people tell you that was normal? Mine, though an 01, does not ready oil level low until it has lost half of the 8q it needs, perhaps 5qt. Don't ask why I know.
I'd be suspicious of the sensor, personally. What is it going to do if you actually lose half your lube? Touchy sensors defeat the purpose. But your engine is fine if it is eating half a quart. No big deal there, unless it did that in the 30 miles you went.

suspicious of the sensor? i would be suspicious of the dealer. always check what you can before you take it to be serviced. that way you know when the BS is flying....

I had the same EXACT thing with my 05. It was not low. It was just a freak thing I think. I read here that others had the same issue. Unless the red oil light on the dash lights up, I wouldn't worry too much. One dude had the car towed to the dealer 3 times before they said it was nothing.
