oil separator picture request

Hey everyone! My separator went a second time and my indy mechanic is wondering what separator they put on last time. And the updated one should have an insulation jacket of some sort? Can anyone send a picture of the updated one with a the insulation jacket?

Thanks

In interested in obtaining pictures as well.

I'm having problems with my oil separator(breather) as well. Last year I noticed an oil leak and had my X towed to a local shop that specializes in BMWs. They mention that they could not find the leak but suspect that it's an oil breather valve and to keep an eye on it. Luckily it never happened again.

We have been getting extremely cold weather in Manitoba (Canada) -30C to -35C (-22F to -31F) the past couple of days and sure enough I found another puddle when I pulled out of the garage today. I typically only drive 15min or so to work so I imagine that this is not long enough to let the condensation to burn off.

Will replacing the oil separator do anything in my case? What other preventative measures can I take to ensure this doesn't keep happening? How about insulating the hoses to prevent condensation in the first place?

On a side note I don't have a block heater and BMW doesn't make one for my X5 (2004 4.4). The shop that I normally take my truck to said that I can install a oil pan heater but it has it's advantages and disadvantages. Whats are your thoughts on this?

Thank you (from an extremely cold X5 owner)

I have read a few things on this issue. One being that some are putting
0W-40 oil in their X for the winter. Also if you drive short distances in cold temeratures Try using the sport mode shifting and keep the rpms up to make the motor run hotter and burn more condensation than usual. Apparenlty bmw made a revised kit for their oil separator that comes with a insulating jacket of some sort. Or simply put it in a garage for those really cold nights? That might help. Last winter I hasd no problems, now this winter I have no garage and its gone twice on me within a month.... Go figure!

Check out Bimmerspecialist.ca for the oil separator, least expensive I have found, I priced out the hoses separately and the valve and it was a lot more than this whole kit. This comes up as $155.99. Key is the cold country version.

More importantly check for leaky injector seals or puddles of gas under the truck (yellow brown snow) when first starting up. Winnipeg winters are harsh and when it's -25 C or colder I've noticed fuel weeping from the first injector, had them all replaced two winters ago, still happens briefly at startup. They seal shortly after the block starts to warm-up.

insulated valve and two hoses. 11 61 7 534 237 GENUINE BMW

Thanks Suave and drbgm!

We finally some warmer weather so that I can tackle this problem. Do you know if the part number is the same for a 2004 4.4?

I haven't noticed any puddles of gas only oil. What is an indication that the oil separator is shot completely? It appears that I only have this problem only on those really cold days (-30C +).

Doesn't the 4.4 have the M62 engine? Which means the CCV is of different design and is located on the back/rear of the intake manifold

4.4 has a different design and its located in a different area in the engine bay then the 3.0 I don't know the part number though. I do know that on the 4.4 its easier to access then on the 3.0..

bimmerspecialist.ca is also out of stock for the oil seperator, I just checked to see out of curiousity.
