I recently thought about trading my '04 4.8is (52000 mi) for a new SUV. It has a trade-in value of approx $22k according to Galves, which most dealers follow religiously. This is depressingly low, and obviously it's only going to get lower. What decent SUV can you get for $22k these days (new or used) that even approaches the overall quality of an X5 4.8is? Nada.

Other than a moon roof shade that prefers the open position, my car is in perfect condition. I've had very few issues over the years, and nothing even close to a major problem. And I've got 18 months left on the CPO and maintenance warranties. So, I think I'm just going to keep my X until she just stops moving. Has anyone else had this revelation recently about their X5? Anyone have a diffeent view?

Premium SUV for 22K? Well, not with the prestige and performance of your X5. But sure, there are plenty of very good - and much cheaper to fix, more reliable, choices for 22K.

1. Used 07 Tahoe. Big, comfy, rock-solid reliability, 20mpg highway, retails for upper teens to low 20's. But they're about as common as gnats in the summer time.

2. Used 05-06 Acura MDX. Excellent reliability, 3rd row, about the same mileage as the X5, retails in low 20's.

I'm sure there are others, but those are two that just quickly came to mind. Both are excellent vehicles, but I'd have to say that neither has the sportiness or prestige of the X5.

Oops, forgot one: how 'bout an '02 or '03 Toyota Land Cruiser? Built like a tank, can go places a mountain goat can't go, very reliable and comfortable as well.

Moral is keep it, especially if it is CPO'ed. I'll have to buy an extended warranty and will be extending the maintenance plan as well, so I will be into it for several thou in the next couple of weeks. Plus it will probably need new summer tires this coming season which are not cheap by any means. But, that's better than getting crushed at the used car market and then starting the losing process all over again with another car.

Good post.... I couldnt use better examples... But the X cant even get close to how reliable the cruiser is and the acura -

'07 GMC Yukon Denali, 6.0L, 6 speed auto, Bose, Nav, heated and cooled seats, AND A HITCH. In this area, $26K-28K. That was a $65K vehicle new. Thinking about getting rid of the '04 if the dealer ever gets it back to me (since before Christmas.)
