On my 2001 it is a sunglasses storage compartment, but yours looks different.

it releases poison gas when a thief is in your car. actually i have no idea, just wanted to throw that poison gas thing out there its the future in alarm systems

manual says the microphone for telephone preparation is there. I'm guessing also a motion detector and thermometer for the climate control.

Got it! access for manual operation of the panoramic sunroof, if it gets jammed or locks up.
