Exclamation Trans. Failsafe Program HELP!!! 2003 X5 4.4

I am new to this and I really hope I can get some answers here.
I drive a 2003 4.4, last night I was pulling out of the gas station and it started feeling like it was starting in 2nd gear, I kept on driving and it at times it felt like it was skipping gears; then the Trans. Failsafe Program message came on the dashboard, I tried to use the manual mode but didn't work, only the "s" mode works. I shutted off the engine and restarted again and it stopped doing for a little while, then did it again. later the "engine check" light came on. I have been doing some research and I have gotten all kinds of veredicts, from replacing a new transmission to a simple battery problem. Even some have blamed it on cold weather ( it was 20 to 30 below zero for the past few days ). Has anyone ran into this situation before? any thoughts??
Please help!!!

I had the same error but after I switched the engine off and back on the message had cleared.

Went to the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong however it can be caused by low battery or changing gears to quickly.
