No, probably because of the potential for fraud. If the instrument panel mileage display is tampered with it shows a light that remains on and indicates the tampering to warn others.

Also keep in mind that, the 4.6/4.8 guage cluster will not work correctly in any other X5 other than the 4.6/4.8! and being that its a used cluster it will need to be coded to your car as the cluster hold software and Hardware info along with the chassis number and other details.

Yes there is a device! and NO a tamper light will not display it the correct equipment is used. However you must remember that on most BMW's from 1999 on, miles is stored on the cluster, the key, the LCM and ECM so if you just do the cluster, original miles is still stored on the other systems.

My understanding is that the tamper light is triggered by the cluster mileage being different than the other systems you reference.
To the original poster: Do you have a reason for wanting to change your mileage, that doesn't involve misrepresentation? If so, wouldn't the dealer be a good place to start?

Yeah I know that! But with the correct equipment, the tamper light still wont display even if the other systems have not be altered.

That means the only people that could tell would be the BMW dealer - and they would have to know exactly where to look. Does that mean it (the equipment you're taking about) fools the untouched systems to sync with the new cluster mileage? Last edited by TwinsPoppa; 01-18-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

There is a way to change the mileage on the cluster however once the stored mileage in the other computers does not match, it will trigger the yellow light that only BMW can fix when they plug it into the machine. The only way to change the cluster to match the correct mileage on the vehicle is with BMW's plug in computer at the service centers which will only match all other stored mileage. So someone looking to swap instrument clusters with a new one, aftermarket one or one of a better model will have to bring it to BMW to set it with the correct mileage recorded to avoid the tamper light from being triggered. The only other option is to stop mileage which requires someone of knowledge who can install a hidden switch in the vehicle which cuts off all recording computers, then you have it unistalled when you sell or trade in the vehicle. I've heard of people who have done this however I personally find it pretty disgusting that anyone would. I'm sure none of us would like it if it was done to us.
