The MPG Challenge.

Well, I have recently been averaging 20.7 mpg around town and this evening I had a trip from Heathrow to Tooting SW London to do. Starting with a warm engine, I decided to try and see what mpg I could get from my 4.4i driving within the speed limits all the way.

Well, I used cruise control at 70 mph on the M25, drove manually the rest of the trip, 33 miles in all in average traffic conditions, no jams but <25 mph through Wimbledon and Tooting, caught 7 sets of lights. Car is chipped, no front silencer and running super-unleaded. Driver only with an overnight bag.

Well I managed 27.7 mpg!!! Very happy with that and 303 bhp when I need it. It's also £8 cheaper to fill up on super-unleaded than on diesel too. I'm really starting to wonder if those oil burners are really that much cheaper to run and worth the extra maintenance costs.

you drive a *lot* more conservatively than I do. I'm happy with 18.8mpg average...

Though your gallon is a little larger than ours as I recall, so it's not a direct comparison.

Did you measure using the OBC or the old fashioned method? I've seen up to 2mpg difference between the two..

Wow, you have a V8 in the UK??? How many pounds does it take to fill up your petrol tank from empty? When I left the UK in 2000, petrol was around .89p/litre. I'm sure it has increased since then...

My fiance is averaging 12.1 mpg, about 95% stop and go. We both work slightly less than 3 miles from our home. We don't drive much however since our work and pretty much all our friends and family live fairly close. We've had the X5 for almost a month now and have put about 400 miles on it. I'm averaging 17.4 in my 08' 328 coupe and we're averaging about 18.9 mpg in our 06' Volvo S40 2.4 which is now an extra car for us. I use it in the snow since my RWD coupe with sport package is useless and the lease buyout was dirt cheap.
