Another blown turbo...

2004 X5 3.0D 130.000km's
Sudden lack of power and some smoke from the exhaust.
Managed to get it to a BMW dealer in Luxembourg.
They told me that if it was the turbo it would cost about 1000 euros for the parts + 1000 euros labour.
6 days later got a call from them saying it was a blown turbo indeed and that the exhaust was full of oil.
Just for the parts 3600 euros
As I read this I told him to just replace the turbo and drain the oil from the exhaust.
Unfortunately Spice didn't follow up on his story.
Do you think the cat will have to be replaced as well?
Guess it will be a lot cheaper to replace the cat myself if needed.
Can you drive the car normally if the cat is not functioning?

Unless your ECU gives you a catalytic code, I would not worry about it. If you can wipe out most of the oil pre-cat, the rest should burn off once the cat reaches temp. As long as it is not exposed to excessive amounts of gas or oil for prolonged periods of time it should be ok.

It should be drivable even if the cat fails (which it will not do competely, but will give an inappropriate voltage reading from the sensor monitoring it).

Sidebar - thats only what, 60,000 miles? The turbo probably should not have gone out that early. It sounds like too much oil was getting past the seals, which could be a function of something else rather than just 'turbo seal failure.'

130.000km's would be about 80.000 miles.
I drive highway only between 80 and 120mph and always slowdown when getting close to my destination to let the engine cooldown.
@alpac, nope, no extended warranty.
Bought the car in Germany when it was 1 year old.
It always produced quite some smoke when stepping on the pedal but I never had to add oil in between sevicing the car.
