EMISSION CONTROL-AIR PUMP

I think this what you looking for.
#6 shows to be an air cleaner. I would first strip the old one and check out that air filter. May be blocked or worst case pump may need replacing. Also check for leaks at the hoses and gaskets.

Thanks 01
Thats exactly what I needed. Most helpful.
I looked at it at lunch...it sounds like it is "buzzing' (engine off). Is that possible ?

The part in the upper right on the diagram with no number is usually the problem when you have a faulty secondary air pump. That valve does 2 things, it opens up to allow circulation when the pump is needed. More important is what it does when you shut down. When you shut down that valve has to be closed. If it's not closed moisture will get into the secondary air pump and cause it to fail.

Check the vacuum hose to the valve, they are common to crack.

There is a TIS updated 04/2004 on this.
Failure of Secondary Air System(Fault Analysis Guide)

#14 is the non-return valve. If the pump needs replacing then it is suggested you replace the valve too.

Strange i got the same error last week. I just went outside and started the car and i can hear the secondary air pump working for about 1min after starting the car and my check engine light went off. Maybe i need to replace the valve.

Thanks Cleaner. The valve is by far the cheaper part...I think I'll start with that. I did check the small vacuum line off of the valve...it seems to be ok.
Thanks again for your help. We have to do what we can in this economy.

Ok, so if the valve damages the pump, does that mean that the pump will no longer turn on? Mine seems to turn on now and the check engine light is gone away for now.....guess i will keep an eye on it.

You should replace it if the pump is bad so it wont be a waste of money if that does not cure the problem and you have to change out the pump.
