also check something called the main sucking jet. when i was working on my water pump / radiator hoses i knocked this bad bay around and it caused some trouble. i just put it all back to together and everything was fine. don't remember the codes, maybe i posted about it, but it definitely ran like crap without the peddle floored.

RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i Vacuum control - engine

the top popped off it (whats pictured to the right, that comes apart). i lined it up properly, snapped it back into place, used a little glue/sealant and used a zip tie to hold it together.

Sounds like I need to make a run to The Home Depot j/k

Thanks for the help, I'll try it. Hope it works.

Can prolonged driving in this condition cause any additional damage? Gonna try to bang this out today, or tommorow.

haha... i would say that you will most likely notice considerable drop in hp/fuel mileage/ and you may cause a bit of trouble if the engine is not burning all the fuel coming into the engine. (as far as build up on injectors and oxygen sensors)

i wouldn't be surprised if you have a bad oxygen sensor somewhere.

Wierdest thing occured! On my way to the parts dept to fix this SOB, I decided to fill up since I was on empty. (Not sure if this had anything to do with it, but figured I mentioned it) I had a huntch that it may be fule related...Contaminated fuel, Octane grade etc..SO I FLOORED IT! just so I can burn all of that fuel out, Filled up the tank, AND WHADDYA KNOW?? ...the SES light came off!!

..Is this normal? Does it mean it fixed it self or something, or should I once again, expect to see that light on sometime soon???

...BTW surprisingly enough the fuel consumption is also back to normal as well! The places I drove to today on a half of a tank is amazing, compared to my fuel consumption last week when the problem first occured.

dont calc fuel consumption by watching the gauge, use the trip odometer. then check with your next fill up how many gallons were actually used.

it could be bad gas, just keep an eye on everything. a little air / vacuum leak somewhere can make all the difference.

Hi, guys, I have just witnessed the same problem with the p0491 & p0492. I have a 2002 3.0i and I want to know if the small hose connecting the secondary air valve to the solenoid is under the engine covers for the 3.0i or just the 4.4? I can see the hose connecting around the left side of the engine but it disappears behind the back. Does it come thru the center of the engine from the back? and I have read it looks like it has a blue strip, does this apply to 3.0i?

I hear the pump working quiet enough, and I have cleaned the valve with carburetor cleaner. I plan to check the solenoid + hose for vacuum pressure...checking if its the hose or solenoid. Is there any other advice people can give. I know the air pump and pressure hose to the valve are good. After taking off the valve, I didnt notice a gasket there which is what I see in the service manual. Is this a problem or not?

Getting back into it. please advise.

OK, I feel very little amount of vacuum pressure from the solenoid, would this prove to be my problem? Is there suppose to be a lot of vacuum pressure?

Also, I reset the codes and cold started it and nothing has come up yet. I timed the air pump run time and it was about 73 seconds long. The DIS stated it should last from 2.5 seconds to about 105 seconds. So this should mean to me, that it is not an actuating relay problem.

How much time should I wait for the engine to cool long enough for another cold start.
