There isn't the same risk of disturbing the sediment as there is in the automatic transmission, since there isn't a valve body to worry about.
There is also less reason to change the fluid. Early X5s used Dexron III, later ones (post 2004) have the x drive and so in that case I would buy replacement fluid from the dealer, it is just simpler. I can't see the logic to worrying about it at 17,000 miles. If you want to do it (it isn't called for in the maintenance schedule) I suggest you put it on the list for Inspection II at 60,000 miles

my tranny has been slipping . the dealer has replced the mechatronics. recentley the same problem started with the tranny again. this time they said it was the fluid in the transfer case. does anyone know exactly what this is ?has anyone else had this problem?
