if they allow chains and you put them on then i wouldn't see the need for snow tires.

Agreed. We've been to quite a few ski resorts, and have never had a problem negotiating the roads, and we used to take my 2WD Yukon with all-season tires quite a bit.

You need to read some of numerous threads on this topic (especially reply #26 of the thread mentioned above). Here are a couple of important points though:
1. Your tires are not snow, winter or even all season tires, don't expect them to handle well in those conditions. If you do, you will be unpleasantly surprised. They are high performance summer tires only. 2. BMW does not recommend putting chains on the front wheels at all. 3. BMW only recommends putting approved chains on the rear wheels of your car, but only on 17" wheels / tires.
