Fuel Injection FAULT !!

Hi there,

has anyone got any ideas about this ?

Car is a 2001 X5 3.0 Diesel, drives normally until you open up the throttle then a message appears accross the screen on the dash saying " Fuel Injection " this is followed by a massive loss in power as the vehicle goes into limp home mode. if you swotch the car ignition on and off it restarts without the fault but does exactly the same as before when the throttle pedal is pressed down more than half way. The car can be driven on part throttle no problem at all. The car is regularly serviced and has clean oils, filters and decent diesel in her. Any clues before i spend a fortune at the main dealer ??

I guess by the lack of views on this subject that i am the only person that has encountered this problem !! Which i guess is going to make it difficult to solve.

Does anyone have a method of actually being able to read this fault in more detail?

Maybe a sequence of button pressing or something !

Computer hookup

I've not seen this error reported on this board before.....but there aren't many of use with diesels either!

The only way to find out what is causing this is to get the car hooked up to a computer.
You could look to see if there is a local independent that has the facilities to read the fault codes - this may be a cheaper alternative to the dealer. The fault may be something as simple as a sensor fault.

Did this happen suddently or after you had some work done in the car?Since it drives normally until you open the throttle it could that you are not getting enough fuel into the engine or your Turbo is giving out excessive boost
pressure!Either way ,the X5 will enter into SAFE mode!
However "Fuel Injection error" comes up with injector and/or pump related problems!The 3.0 d engine is quite prone to injector failures after a certain mileage!It could be something simple like a loose vacuum tube around your engine bay ,so look around for something that might look loose.You have a Vacuum reservoir black box down the front right of the engine(near the turbo),check if its ok!Check for any Diesel smell or leaks.Take the engine cover off and see if any injector wires are twisted or broken!I assume that your fuel filter is not blocked?Try switching off the battery to try and reset the fault memorized by the ECU..
If the car is overboosting,it could be the 6mm tube from your turbo inlet to
the Wastegate valve that is loose or broken and the valve is not actuating?
Dont think it is your MAF because although the car suffers in performance ,it normally will not activate the SAFE mode.
Difficult to guess anything else without having checked the items mentioned above,but please do let us know if you do find the fault....
Meanwhile(its bank holiday here today in Portugal!),tomorrow I am back at work and if I discover anything that might help you,I will post.

I have had my vehicle into a BMW specialist today (Not main dealer) They had the compatable diagnostic machinery to hook up to the OBC port. The dash still reads FUEL INJECTION. The diagnostic tool came up with two fault codes P1190 RAIL PRESSURE and P0190 FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR.

The technician believed it was the pressure sensor/switch at the back of the engine that sits on the fuel rail !!

I have ordered the part, will let you know on tuesday if it cures the problem.

I am not convinced that this is it but time will tell

It could be!Hopefully its just a bad sensor sending data to the ECU and nothing major.....!
The fuel pressure sensor is also the sensor to which a Powerbox is normally connected to increase power in your engine.Have you ever had one installed in the X5?Let us know on Tuesday...Thanks

Just to let you know it went into the BMW dealer to readress the fault code diagnosis after the fuel rail sensor switch did nothing. It turns out that i had a leaking injector which was bleeding off into the fuel rail causing the pressure to rise which caused it to go into fail safe mode.

Interestingly BMW are aware of this and have upgraded the new ones to combat this problem, so if you have an early low mileage 3.0 D sport out of waranty beware as due to the lower mileage this engine will not have encountered this problem under its waranty period. New injectors are £260 each and there are 6 !!!!!

My X5 is now running as she should do and is able to achieve 180 KMP ..Not bad for an oil burner.

I am in the process this week of fitting a fully programmable ECU to her and altering boost, timing and fueling to achieve a large amount of extra torque and power will let you know what the Dyno figs are later.
