Weird Noise

So lately I've been experiencing this really strange, almost faint grinding sound when at low speeds at I take my foot of the gas. It sounds like you're going really really fast in reverse that high pitch rubbing sound. I can barely hear it in the cabin, however when I roll the window down it's completely obvious. Anyone have any ideas?

Does it do it all the time or only when its cold? Could it be whining from the transmission or differential when its cold?

Hopefully weasel will see this thread.

It happens when the car is about half way warmed up and continues for a while even when it's at operating temps

Weasel will become famous soon enough
Could it possible be tire noise? Wheel bearings? Noises in the drivetrain really need to be experienced to isolate all conditions and see what actions have what affects on the noise.

If you suspect the transfer case you could unplug the VTG module under the rear seat or the actuator motor on the case itself (with the key off) and that would have the pressure off of the clutches and no power sent to the front wheels... But this will cause a fault that you would need to clear. Like I said, only do this if you believe it is from the t-case.
