Ride Quality Q: FX35 vs X5

Ok, just a little background. We have an '03 FX35 with sport package/20" rims. Ride is pretty stiff. Wife is getting tired of the roughness of the ride. We're thinking of getting an X5 4.4 or 3.0.

My question is...anyone have an expierence the ride between these two?
Is the Sport Package/ 18" on X5 be only a little better than the ride on the FX? I'm looking for soft, but not Mercedes/Lexus soft ride. Better off going non-sport with 17"?

I've test driven an x5 with sport, couldn't really tell any difference between sport/nonsport, but then again, dealer would only let me go around the block!
