Keep at it! It's like trying to explain how to ride a bicycle for the first time...go find a big, empty parking lot this weekend, eg very early on Sunday morning, and Practice, Practice,Practice. Do some take offs from inclines, too.

After a month or two, it's cake. After 45 years, it is almost hard wired, lol!

You will find 1st gear is Very Short, so 2nd gear starts on any slight downhill are easy. And, you rarely need to row through all 6 gears: 1st, (or 2nd), to start, go to 3rd and go to 5th if needed or into OD 6th.

I think the X5 6speed is cool...however the clutch travel is way too long. It kind of takes away from the driving experience of the X5.

I guess I have gotten lazy. I like the auto in Sport mode. It seems to work better than Manual mode.

i agree about the prelude. That is my daily driver. The X5 is my mom's car. The engagement point in BMWs tend to be a little vague. Maybe it's because of the CDV?

He speaks the truth. Learning is the hardest part, once you have the concept of first gear down and quit bucking or stalling the car, the rest is cake. You'll find that any good roll, even under 10mph can allow you to jump right into 2nd gear with a little foot work. To me reverse was the hard gear to learn, couldn't tell you why.

I learned on a Toyota Corrola which is nice cause it has zero power/torque which makes the clutch very light and easy to move. Learning on an X may be a little more tricky.

I learned on my Aunt's MB 230SL - went on a date and stalled out in 3 successive traffic lights - by the time of the 3rd one my date was fuming with embarrasment while I was laughing my head off - no problems ever since then

Ah do I long for my 1st car a 1967 Mini 850cc with a crash gearbox (no syncromesh) so double declutching and fast changes were a dream at the time. Also the view of the M6 Motorway flashing by through the rusted floorboards somehow added to the excitement at the time.

I still miss the manuals but living in Europe most of the time now has brought me back 2 reality until my X gets into Rotterdam next Wednesday

The poor girl will miss the California sun but hopefully she'll be back in the US of A by next winter.
