SES light with P0014 OBDII Fault Code

I just did an oil service with filter, air filter, cleaned the fuel injection air flow sensor and changed the CV boots on the right front.

After I did the oil change I cleaned the engine as is my norm. No problems on engine start. I let the engine sit for a while and did a final engine oil service level check...all OK, no SES light.

I then proceeded to do the boot, I finished the boot installation but ran out of light since I was working outside and finished installing the brakes on the passenger side this morning. I also ran the engine once the brakes were installed to expand the caliper I contracted to take the brake off. Everything was still fine, no SES light.

Once I finished and got the car off the jack stands I got in the car to take it on a test drive. When I started the car I got the SES light.

I checked fuel tank cap, oil fill cap and air cleaner, and ducting where I disconnected to clean the air flow sensor...all OK.

I have a cheap OBDII reader so I hooked it up and it gave me a P0014 code. My book that came with the OBDII reader says the cam sensor bank 2 advanced. I cleared the code, took it for a test drive and the light stayed off. On the next restart the SES light came back on and when checked with the reader I had the same P0014 code.

I tried a Search on this forum and the codes I find are 8 digit codes and don't have the "P" in front of them. Do I need to have the codes read by a reader that can read the BMW codes or do I have enough information to proceed?

Do I have a cam sensor problem, if so what is the solution?

Can anyone help me find out what this problem is?

The car is running great, it is a 2001 X5 3.0 with 94,000 miles on it and has had excellent service. To my knowledge this car has never had a SES light.

My apologies, earlier I did not go far enough down the list of BMW codes to find the P Codes, they are near the bottom of the list.

The fault that is giving me the SES is P0014, the Code list describes this code as:

P0014 B Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

I assume Bank 1 is Cylinders 1-3, correct?

Does anyone know what the remedy might be for this.

I did have the MAS out, cleaned it with some Throttle Body cleaner and reinstalled. The idle had been a little rough after cleaning the idle was normal. I checked the connections and the intake tubing and they all appear to be normal.

The SES will Erase and remain off for the first engine start, at the second engine start the SES reappears and throws the P0014 code.

The car seems to be running fine.

Any ideas?

The question is if it is the intake or exhaust cam sensor... but yes bank 1 is cylinders 1-3

Is there any way to diagnose whether a Cam Senor problem originates with the Exhaust or the Intake?

Someone posted on this forum that the sensors are the same, I guess it is worth replacing one then testing and if that doesn't work swap with the other. Odds are only one is bad.

What is strange is the car is running what seems to be perfectly, no symptoms of a problem.

It was also posted on this forum to use only the OEM cam sensor because the aftermarket was unreliable. What is the best source for OEM parts, can anyone recommend a good OEM Internet dealer?

Proper diagnostic equipment will tell you. And #1 in this link is the intake cam sensor, #2 is the exhaust cam sensor.
