There is no operational or electrical reason why you cannot put the resistor close to the LED but it likely makes it very hard to fit the LED into the very small space in the lock cover. It's just a question of fitment...

Does your X5 not have these as standard.? I figured all E53 X5 had these...?

Easy to add the covers with puddle lights from a wrecker or eBay etc.

no mine did not come with those .. and the reason i ask if anyone did them because i have extra pre wired lights so i figured i could use 2 of them on the mirror cover i have .. i dont want to buy those ones from ebay because after i got to get them painted and i dont want to pay $150 or $200 for that when i have a pair painted already thats why i ask if anyone or if its possible to do the mod to my existing mirror covers

I guess it would depend on if the wiring was in place even though you don't have the puddle lights fitted. It would likely be very difficult to add any extra wiring from the door out to the mirror via the folding mechanism....

Chances are there is some wiring there though - BMW seem to fit standard looms in most cases. Getting power down it would involve opening up the door and locating the factory wiring points for the mirror etc.

Here's the wiring diagram....
