The previous company's owner that made the first hitch died or something and the company went out of business. So, for a long time hitches were not available to buy.

BMW found another company to make the "new" hitches but they are EXACTLY the same - just made by a different company. They were given the dwgs, specs, etc. of the original. So, it's the same exact design.

Is it the OEM hitch? There is no problem with the OEM hitch. Just the aftermarket hitches. After installing the OEM hitch, I see why people have had the afermarket hitches damage the unibody frame. The OEM hitch has supports that actually go inside the suframe instead of just bolting on.

Now that the hitches are readily available, do you think the prices will come down a bit? Similarly to how the OEM crossbars can be had $170 shipped from ebay? $500 seems like a lot for a hitch!

Well, the hitches being available is great but more to the point is there's still a lot of demand.

Basically, the dealers are the only places to get them. So, you know they're all going to charge a premium regardless of a "price reduction".

I do want to get a hitch and use it to put the bike carrier assembly on there so I can bring our bikes on trips to yosemite, etc. I don't tow anything else so I don't want to waste $500 to carry 2-3 bikes...lol. I think I answered my own question. A $150 aftermarket rig is in order for my uses...hahahah

Wasn't a dumb question at all. I enjoy seeing people come to their own conclusions.
