60K miles - now what?
I am new to these boards, and this is my first post to the forum. What a great resource! I am the proud owner of a 2002 4.4 X5, which has served me very well since new and recently crossed the 60K mile threshold. I would like to know what services my SAV needs at this point to keep it running strong for the next 60K. I already have reviewed the archives, so I think I have a pretty good idea of what the "normal" 60K Inspection II entails, but I want to address all of the issues typically needed at the 60K mark. Please let me know if you think this is a comprehensive list, and if not, please feel free to let me know what else I need to do: 1.) Inspection II 2.) Water pump replacement 3.) Coolant hose replacement 4.) Power steering fluid flush 5.) Transmission service (is this a drain and fill, or filter change, too?) Also, if anyone can offer some ballpark pricing on the above, that would be helpful. I am located in Virginia, USA. Thanks in advance, and I hope that I can contribute to this community now that I have discovered it! Yours, X5/VA |

Personally I wouldn't change the water pump at 60,000 miles, but at 7 years old I would look at all the coolant hoses very carefully. Also check out the crankcase vent system hoses. Belts too. They probably could use a changin' and cleanin'. Flush of power steering fluid, it's up to you. Personally I wouldn't mess with it unless it's leaking due to those stupid hose clamps. In that case I would flush it, change the clamps, any hoses that are leaking and maybe even throw in a new reservoir since it has an integral filter that can't be changed and it only runs around $25. Best transmission fluid change is one where you drop the pan and clean it (and the magnets) well. Might as well also change the transfer case fluid and maybe the front/rear diff fluids.
Inspection II covers a lot. Look at suspension components carefully, wheels, tires, alignment, etc. |

I would do the pump. Do the belts while you're in there.
I had my pump go south on my at 38K, and it was not pleasant waiting almost 6hrs for a tow.. |

Thanks for the help so far . . .
So, no on the power steering fluid, but yes on the water pump and coolant hoses. Any other thoughts?
Thanks for all the help so far. |
