Instrument Cluster Exchange

Gooday

Plenty of posts on this subject however I am reading considerable conflicting statements, I would appreciate if someone can provide factual information.

I own a 2000 X5 4.4L, tacho and pixels have failed. I purchased a second hand cluster from an outlet in Aus and took the vehicle to the local BMW Dealership. I had been informed that the programming information contained within the original cluster could be downloaded and reloaded into the new cluster.

Despite many attempts the service manager could not carry out this task, tamper light lit in the exchange unit and access to other vehicle computor functions were inhibitted.

Any solutions to resolve this issue would be appreciated. BMW Aus do not have the same good will policy that exists elsewhere whereby they replace clusters under warranty.

The bottom line is I want to reprogram the exchange cluster retaining computor modules access and mileage stored in the original unit. There is no intent to alter the vehicle odometer reading.

Can I do this without purchasing a brand new cluster from BMW?

You needed a place like this
BMW, Porsche, Land Rover Instrument Cluster Repair and restoration of MID & LCD repair for the typical missing or faded pixel problem

From their website
eBay and Junkyard Cluster FAQs
If you choose to purchase a used cluster from either eBay or a junkyard you'll have a hard time getting it programmed to match your car and if you don't program it you'll have a harder time selling your car. BMW has a mileage tamper indicator that will illuminate when the unit is not programmed to match your vehicle's VIN and transmission.

So I would say that the service manager caused the tamper indicator to illuminate because he didn't know how to program it to match the LCM and transmission or the used cluster was already illuminated.
