Angry Metal on Metal scraping noise?

Hello,

I ve been trying to figure this out but no luck. ok here is the info..

i have about 110K its an 03 3.0i.
at 96k Dealer did a tranny flush and thats all.

I have original oils in the front axles, transfer case, and rear diff.

The noise sounds like a metal hanger scraping against a moving metal part.
its almost like a stuck debris in the rotor....

the sound only appears when you are pressing the accelerator. its sounds like a its dealing with the drive shaft...ive narrowed it down to near the transfercase area. now. if your driving about 20 mph you hear the sound very clearly but if you through the car into N the sound disapears.

Also. the sound appears in R and D but in either direction if its put in N there is no sound.

so its not from the bearings something with driveshaft...

Dealer has looked at it and cant determine the cause they say they need to do some really indepth tests....which means money!!! lol

so has anyone come across such sound?

my second problem is with the right front passenger side wheel i hear rubber slipping suspension sounds when i drive very slow over bumps it squeaks what can it be? dry bushing?

TIA

The metal on metal sound you're hearing is most likely your torque converter. If there are no drive-ability issues regarding the transmission, then it may just be the converter. Just an FYI...if it is indeed your torque converter, the longer you continue to drive the more damage will occur to the converter case. The case can be re-used if you go with a re-built converter. If the case is damaged, you'll need a whole new assembly... ~$2K (USD).

The squeaks over bumps are possibly the bushing. Look for cracks in the bushing.

This may sound stupid, but if i change the oil in the converter can that help diagnose if its going bad?

or do i have to remove it all and inspect the internals?

the bushings is an interesting one because the dealer made me change them saying that the vibration i was experiencing when braking was from worn out bushings hmmm i have to be pushy on that subject when i go back in...

fyi i am also out of warrenty extened too....but i think my dealer gives 2 yr warrenty on any work they do...

Not a stupid question...considering that you've already performed a flush and issue still persists, i don't believe it would do any good. Not sure exactly how handy you are but if you're capable of removing your trany and getting to the torque converter, the internals are what may be causing your issue. Eventually it may cause some gears to fail.

Here's a trany repair thread by member: swissfrank - http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...omes-time.html

Lastly, you may want to check the idler and tensioner pulley system. They can be a bit noisy when they're going bad.

I suggest doing a search on this site...You'll be surprised at the results a thorough search on this forum will yield. Good luck!

Artman - I have an 05 4.4 with 52k mi. I have a very similar sound. Typically its at slow speeds when the gas is slightly pressed around a turn (less than 15mph). It almost sounds like an exhaust or engine bog sound (low groan). Been to the dealer multiple times and can never duplicate the sound. Everything checks out so at the moment still of unknown origin. I have suspected differential but still no cure or diagnosis... just thought I'd share...

i sometimes get squeaking pulley on cold start and always whine sound when warmed , seems to be power steering related as it`s loudest when steering wheel turned , whine sound varies with rpm .

Well, I also sometimes get that pulley squeaking but amacman i think thats just normal i guess.

With mine at first it sounds like there has to be some pressure or torque on the drive shaft or the tranny for that sound to occur and its the metal to metal scraping sound that has gotten louder and it can be heard on the highway doing 60 -80 mph how about you X5_Rob?

oh X5_Rob, does your sound cut off when you place it in N? like mine?

Well X5_Rob, mine started out as you said at low throttle and usually from taking off from stop at slow speed i dont recall if it was more pronounced in turns or not at slow speed but either way mine started at a slow speed too...

Any update on your issue X5_Rob?

I was thinking of buy this set from

BMW X5 10-Piece Control Arm Kit

not a bad price for all the parts then i was going to ask my mechanic to put the car up and listen while we put it in drive let it spin the wheels just to see if its comming from the tranny or somewhere else...

any other suggestions?
