The engine knocking sound: sounds similar to a diesel engine. I have a similar sound that comes and goes at startup. Had a dealer, indy and mod-shop all diagnose and they said there's nothing wrong. May be common with the "IS" models.

Exhaust: it pops and burbles a bit. This is common on startup but if it continues, the previous owner may have replaced the resonator with an x-pipe or straight pipes. Do a search for exhausts and compare to your setup, there a plenty of pics of different setups.

Now I'm no mechanic but both the engine and exhaust just doesn't sound right. You need someone like Weasel, JCL etc to pass a more informed comment.

You're a braver man than me, 'cause I couldn't buy an X5 over the internet after just looking at pics. Couldn't you have got an independant inspection done by a nationally/multi state recognised organisation before actually purchasing ??

I hope the above issues aren't big ticket items.

Good luck and safe driving

Located in Simi Valley. I would like to go to bimmerfest but I have plans on that Saturday which take up most of the day. How long does bimmerfest last?

You have a very nice stable of cars, sir.

OK, exhaust sounds better now. Found the intake tube was loose at the throttle body and was sucking air from outside the tube.

Just had an indy dealer check it out as well. He doesn't think anything is wrong but recommended an oil change. I will do this in a few days. Just ordered some royal purple 10-40.

Xpipe should be installed this Friday.

loose spark plugs can cause a knocking sound too. Very frustrating to find until you have the 'ah ha' moment and put the torque wrench to them.

As do you! Bimmerfest is pretty much an all day event starting at 9am til 5pm or so. But you can come and go as you please. I don't plan on getting there early. Rather just arrive causually late and prob leave early. I've been to many of them and just going again this year after a 4 yr hiatus. Just for kicks.

I am considering just changing the plugs anyway. I am not a big believer in 100,000 before changing plugs.
