Great write up! I like to hear people's stories... either if it's a mechanical or road trip write up. Plus your pictures came out so detailed!... I feel like i'm actually there.

Also, I tried to look up this kit on their website, but I couldn't find it. What did the kit cost? Any US suppliers?

Thanks for the write up, and great pics.
I fully appreciate what you are saying, but the upgraded shocks are a lot of money, and as they are a normal wear item, new one's will always be better than old one's. However you must consider at what point expense outweighs the benefits, and having had the car honestly assessed by somebody who would be more than happy to sell me expensive new shocks (PhoenixMotorsport), telling me that new shocks were not yet required, I felt it an unnecessary expense to replace just for the sake of it, or for the minimal benefits they may give per £.

I can always replace the shocks at a later stage, or even go for a coil over kit, should I wish to do so.

The kit is so new with the polyurethane bushes, and shock combination still in the final stages of development, it has not yet been added to their website, but I am sure they will give you any info if you make an enquiry. They currently have a North American distributor for their range of BMW 8 series products, and I would assume the same distributor will handle their X5 range too.

The CEO at Phoenix Motorsport is incredibly responsive; I sent an e-mail at 11PM last night here in Colorado, and Gerry responded at 9AM my time this morning. I may order their entire suspension setup, as well as their braking components, when they have all ready to go. It also sounds like they may start distributing these parts through their North American distributor (who presently handles their 8 series offerings).

I noticed you didn't cut the bumpers on your struts. I did so it could travel a little more is there a reason or was I not supposed to do that?

If you used the stock strut then no, no need to cut... Using the bilstien strut, the piston is thicker so your original bump stop will not fit that diameter. i dont think the length would matter, its more cushion so it doesnt bottom out.. hope i sound right lol!

Excellent job! Check ecs tuning and their bilstein hd struts and shocks with adjustable spring perch kits avail. This could improve the rebound of the new springs. Surprised you didn't keep with the red look with the parts like the calipers. All in all...great writeup.
Happy motoring!
