Hey Stormtrooper,
Check out this thread by LeMans: US X5 M-sport pack to cost $6500 . Scroll down and you'll see a few E70's with painted flairs. I realise they're not E53's but it should give you some ideas. For some reason we seem to have a lot of E70's painted like this on the GC, Aust.

If you want to be different then go for it (unless you off road a lot). Modding is about being individualistic, so long as you do a good quality job and keep it within the ethos of a BMW.

Check out your standard family sedans, do they have black plastic to all lower portions ?? No.

Like LI said, get a good body shop to do the work for you. Apparently 2 coats of primer have to go on the black plastic parts in order to fill in the rough texture, followed by sanding to an ultra smooth finish pre paint.

GL & post picks when all done.
