I`m no expert and not even sure where the piping is, but could this be anything to do with the rear wash fluid pipe? maybe it passes up that side and in to the rear door?

Not sure on X5's but previous cars I've owned, water in the boot, sorry trunk
has usually been due to a faulty window seal or the rubber seal around the trunk opening.

as far as the piping i doubt its the fluid it didnt have that fluid smell it was clean water. thanks for the thoughts though. |

damn that sucks.
probably a bad seal or something is not seated right. riase the hatch and check especially on the right side. i think the washer fluid runs off the left, although its been a while since i've been in my or Ucrew's rear spoiler... I am sure something is not seated well and there is a gap.. |
