Type of Gas

I recently bought a 2001 4.4 and I asked the previous owner some questions like what kind of oil he uses and gas. He used 87 on this car for I dont know how long.

What type of gas have you guys been using?

Apart from (page 25 below) when you open up the fuel flap door you'll see a fuel grade minimum of 91AKI recommendation sticker.

Me, I use 98 as much as possible as I'm sure most of the members do.

If you can walk away then do so, but you mention you just bought it. GL

Foomph,

The 98 we have in Australia is 98RON. That equals around 93 to 94AKI. AKI (Anti-Knock Index) is the average of RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number). MON is usually 8 to 10 points lower than RON for the same fuel, hence AKI is 4 to 5 points lower than RON.
In very general terms, RON is a measure of how the fuel behaves under moderate operating conditions while MON is a measure of how fuel performs under more severe operating conditions, ie. higher engine speeds, higher loads.

Thanks Fraser,
Very good description on fuel. I'll definately stick with the 98RON now 'cause I have put in 93 on a couple of occasions when the 98 was not available.
Cheers

Cheers

I've used 98RON in the three petrol BMW's we (wife + me) have owned. The 95RON we have here is okay to use but they seem to run better on 98RON and give marginally better economy.
