1) while engine is running, switch off the AC completely, by pressing the fan speed all the way down... until the AC is shut off and the display goes off.
2) AC stays off... then switch off the car
3) when starting the car the next time, the AC will be switched on automatically, although out of the full AUTO mode and with the lowest fan speed.
4) I have to repeat step #1 to turn it off again

in response to question 1. i have no clue but i want to know. (this is not in the manual.) it must have something to do with reprogramming the computer.

If you're referring to the question by the OP then I believe the answer is
on Page 112 in the 2005 manual under Individual air distribution.

What I THINK the original poster is referring to (as well as simoncpw) is if there is a way to have the climate control system completely off when the car is started. Correct me if I'm wrong, Simoncpw, I think, is using the term "AC" when he really means "climate control system" and not specifically the AC. So to sum up (again, this is my interpretation):

1. with car running, switch off climate control system completely (fan is off, car inside is dead quiet, etc.)
2. turn off car
3. restart car
4. climate control starts up again all by itself and seemingly does not 'remember' the fact that it was off when the car was shut off, which according to the car/key memory stuff it should conceiveably do.

The answer to this issue I believe is that there is no way to prevent the climate control from turning itself on at step 4 above, it's just the way it works. (At least I've never been able to get it work any other way)

You guys may be right but since "LIONEL1234554321 doesn't participate
in his own thread it's difficult to know for sure. So what's the use in continuing.

Have a nice evening........

I hope I'm not stealing the thread... but X5 Meister is right on what I was talking / asking about. It's the whole "Climat Control System"... that cannot be prevented from turning itself on.

BMW might have changed / "fixed" this with the newer models... as I didn't have this problem with my 2005 X3 .

Yeah maybe it was designed differently with different models. For the E53 X5 it seems that it can remember the climate control settings, but not the on/off function.

Guys, see post #2
I said LIONEL1234554321 needs to get a GT1 because he has more than 3 beemers and also the GT1 will deactivate the climate control to stay off.
I know it does because I've programmed mine.
