Did you check the Bentley repair manual?

Yeah for some reason old photos seem to disappear here, which is unfortunate in the case of good write ups. My only other suggestion would be to check the BMW TIS.

well x still under warranty so no panic , except when i looked in expansion tank to inspect red float i noticed lower portion changing colour ,
a good indicator that the poxy plastic impeller on pump will be deteriorating.
54000 miles on 2002 4.4i

If it's still under warranty why are you bothering with looking for repair instructions?

BTW, the plastic impeller doesn't have a lot to do with the failure rate anymore. BMW has switched from plastic to metal to plastic impellers and they all fail for one reason or another.

No way to tell unless you open it up. BMW has switched plenty of times. People seem to think the 'metal' impeller water pump is fail-proof. Total nonsense.

my 740i water pump failed at 90,000 miles and the float indicator disintegrated at 100,000 miles , so the plastic fantastic is crap .

so, should i just go drive around europe in the x and sweat a bit or change pump and chill ( about the water pump at least )
