2001, 118000 miles (189000 km). Still going strong. Not much problems and failures, a front end restoration at 105000 and a leaking o-ring in the fuel tank which made that the pump sucked air instead of fuel when the fuel level was going low. The original oil is still in the tranny...

I decided just to stick to BMW recommendation, lifetime oil. Nothing wrong for the moment, the tranny just works like when it was new (I didn't get it new but I know the previous owner). Hope it will continue...
I was tempted to change the oil a couple of times but I finally chickened reading the forums and all the guys breaking their gearbox sometimes after having changed the oil... Maybe mine is reliable as I live in the islands so no high speed runs. On the othern hand, many gear changes on our small and curvy roads and the weather is hot.

I have 115,000 miles and I have the original oil in the tranny as well.

I have never heard of a transmission on a BMW X5 going out because of bad oil.

some owners put non original fluid in the transmission so i think that is why they have problems .
if people did a little research then they would know that you can`t mix the fluids so you must use correct fluid .
the transmission has a label affixed designating the part number for the appropriate fluid .
