dealer cannot do this, all keys are special order. if you want to program it yourself, purchase the $1200 ews programmer tool.

I was going to buy a key on ebay (there are a ton of them), then take the key to the dealer to cut into the shape as my existing key and they have it programmed. I am confused, can the dealer do this our not, if so how much do they charge? Does anyone know a way of getting a key cheaper......as cheap as possible.

Understood - but when you lose that first key you're going to wish you spent the $160.
If you don't want to get a real key get the valet key - i think thats like $75. |

Did they cut the key infront of you and then write the vin and the passcode to the EEPROM?

you can purchase the key from the dealer cut and programmed (it takes a few days to come in because they do not cut and program it there) i was just at the dealer paying for Inspection II when the guy next to me was quoted $175 for a key excluding his BMW CCA discount..

Don't buy a key from EBay
I bought a set of keys from EBay and brought them to the dealer.
They told me that BMW Factory sent out a memo to ALL dealers to "not cut any keys" because the factory was broken into and a bunch of "raw" keys where stolen and now are on EBay for sale. I returned my keys to the seller and bought a new key from the dealer for $166 including tax. |
